AI-driven purchases on Shopify increased 11x in 2025. Agentic Storefronts let customers buy your products without leaving ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, or Copilot. Here's the complete setup guide — including eligibility requirements, the Knowledge Base App, and exactly what to do if you're not eligible yet.
In January 2026, Shopify launched Agentic Storefronts as part of their Winter '26 Edition — a feature that turns AI platforms like ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity into fully functioning sales channels for your store. When a customer asks ChatGPT "what's the best running shoe for wide feet under $120?", your products can now appear in the response — and the customer can buy directly inside the conversation without visiting your store.
This guide covers the complete setup process, including the parts most guides skip: the Knowledge Base App, product data requirements, the critical limitations that affect tracking and checkout, and a concrete action plan for stores that aren't eligible yet. The preparation matters whether you can enable it today or not — your products are already being crawled and recommended by AI platforms regardless of your settings.
As of March 2026, Agentic Storefronts are in early access and currently only available for US-based stores selling to US customers. International stores are not yet eligible for direct AI checkout — though your products are still discoverable by AI platforms via web crawling and Shopify Catalog. The preparation steps in this guide apply to all stores regardless of eligibility. Section 9 covers exactly what to do if you can't enable it yet.
Shopify Agentic Storefronts connect your product catalog to AI platforms through a single setup in your Shopify admin, allowing your products to be discovered and purchased directly inside AI conversations — with no separate integrations required for each platform.
There's an important distinction most merchants miss. Product discovery on AI platforms already happens without Agentic Storefronts. AI platforms like ChatGPT and Google already crawl the web and can recommend your products. What Agentic Storefronts adds is direct checkout — the ability for a customer to complete a purchase inside ChatGPT without being redirected to your store.
Without Agentic Storefronts active: AI platforms can recommend your products (via web crawling and Shopify Catalog), but customers are redirected to your store to complete the purchase.
With Agentic Storefronts active: Customers can discover your products AND complete checkout directly inside the AI conversation. Your pricing and inventory stay current in real time. Orders appear in Shopify Admin with full channel attribution.
The technical infrastructure behind this is Shopify Catalog — a centralised product data system that uses AI to structure and syndicate your data to all connected AI platforms simultaneously. Combined with the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) co-developed with Google, it allows AI agents to show real-time pricing, accurate inventory, and complete transactions on your behalf while you retain full ownership of the customer relationship.
Before doing anything else, check whether your store has access. Go to your Shopify Admin and navigate to Settings → Apps and sales channels. If you see an "Agentic Storefronts" section, your store is eligible or in early access. If you don't see it, your store is not yet eligible — skip to Section 9 for what to do in the meantime.
If you don't see Agentic Storefronts in your admin, go to shopify.com/chatgpt to register for early access notification. Shopify sends an email and admin notification when your store becomes eligible. In the meantime, complete the preparation steps in Section 9 — they directly improve your AI discoverability right now regardless of eligibility status.
Each AI platform works slightly differently. Here's what each one means for your store and its customers.
OpenAI's ChatGPT surfaces product recommendations during shopping conversations. With Agentic Storefronts enabled, customers can complete checkout directly inside ChatGPT. ChatGPT is rolling out sponsored product placements alongside organic results — positioning now builds long-term visibility before paid inventory is widely available.
Google AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app integrate directly with Shopify Catalog via the Universal Commerce Protocol. As the search platform most associated with purchase intent, Google AI Mode commerce is potentially the highest-value channel in this suite. Native shopping checkout in Google surfaces is actively rolling out.
Microsoft Copilot integration includes a new embedded checkout experience. Copilot is integrated across Microsoft 365, Windows, and Bing — giving it reach across business and consumer contexts. The embedded checkout means customers don't need to leave their Copilot session to complete a purchase.
Perplexity is the fastest-growing AI search engine and has built a reputation for commerce-relevant searches. Shopify products are surfaced through Perplexity's product discovery features. Direct checkout availability may vary by region and rollout stage.
Complete these steps in order. Steps 3 and 4 (Knowledge Base and product data) should be done before enabling the channels in Step 5, as your Shopify Catalog feeds directly to the AI platforms you activate.
Go to Settings → Apps and sales channels. Confirm you see an Agentic Storefronts section. Then go to Settings → Policies and ensure you have the following added: Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and Refund Policy. These are required before you can activate any AI channel. If your policies page is empty, Shopify provides templates — fill them in accurately for your store, not with placeholder text. AI agents will use this policy information to answer customer questions.
Also confirm guest checkout is enabled: Settings → Checkout → Customer accounts — set to "Accounts are optional" or "Accounts are disabled". You cannot require login before checkout.
// ~10 minutesGo to Settings → Apps and sales channels → Knowledge Base App. If you don't see it, search "Knowledge Base" in the Shopify App Store. The app is free for Shopify Plus. For standard plans (Basic, Shopify, Advanced) it costs $50/month.
Click Activate. The Knowledge Base App is invisible to your customers — it only surfaces to AI agents. It's the primary way you control how AI platforms describe your brand, answer policy questions, and represent your products in conversations. Merchants who set up their knowledge base correctly typically see AI-referred traffic within 2–3 weeks. Full setup instructions are in Section 5 below.
// ~5 minutes to install · 20 minutes to populateAI agents rely entirely on your product data to generate accurate recommendations. Before enabling any AI channel, audit your top 20 products and ensure each has: a complete, descriptive title (avoid vague names like "Product A — Blue"); a detailed description covering materials, dimensions, use cases, and differentiators; all variants clearly defined with accurate pricing; current inventory levels; and high-quality images (AI surfaces visuals alongside recommendations).
For stores with custom product data structures — metafields, tag prefixes, custom grouping logic — use Shopify Catalog Mapping (Settings → Agentic Storefronts → Catalog Mapping) to map your custom fields to the standard fields AI platforms understand. This is especially important for stores with complex variant structures. Full product data guidance is in Section 6.
// ~20 minutes for top 20 products · ongoing for full catalogGo to Settings → Apps and sales channels → Agentic Storefronts. You will see the available AI channels listed individually. For each channel you want to enable:
Click the channel name → Read the channel-specific terms → Activate the channel toggle to agree to the Supplemental Terms of Service. Repeat for each channel: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity.
You can toggle each channel on or off individually at any time. Disabling a channel stops direct checkout but does not hide your products from AI discovery — customers will still see your products in recommendations but will be redirected to your store to purchase. To hide products from AI discovery entirely, set the product status to Unlisted (note: this also removes the product from your online store search and sitemaps).
// ~5 minutesIn your Shopify Admin, go to Agentic Storefronts → Test Agent. Ask questions your customers would typically ask: "Do you have [product type] in [size/colour]?", "What is your return policy?", "How long does shipping take?". Verify the AI agent returns accurate product information and policy details from your Knowledge Base.
Then open ChatGPT directly and search for products in your category. Your products may not appear immediately — it typically takes 2–3 weeks for AI platforms to index and surface new Agentic Storefront connections. The test agent in your admin gives you immediate verification of your data quality.
// ~10 minutesAI-attributed orders appear in your Shopify Admin Orders list with channel attribution labels (ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode etc). To monitor performance: go to Orders → Filter → Sales channel and select the relevant AI channel. Check weekly once your channels have been active for 2–3 weeks.
Critical tracking note: Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire in all agentic storefront checkouts — only server-side pixels fire. This means if your GA4 setup relies on client-side events, you will not see agentic storefront orders in GA4 automatically. Use Shopify's built-in channel attribution in the Orders view as your primary source of truth for AI channel performance. See the CAPI Shield guide to ensure your server-side tracking is properly configured.
// Ongoing monitoringThe Knowledge Base App is the most overlooked part of the Agentic Storefronts setup. Most guides tell you to install it. Almost none tell you what to actually put in it — or why it's so important.
When a customer asks ChatGPT "does [your brand] offer free returns?", the AI pulls the answer from your Knowledge Base. If your Knowledge Base is empty, the AI either guesses (potentially incorrectly) or says it doesn't have that information — both outcomes cost you conversions. When your Knowledge Base is complete, the AI gives accurate, on-brand answers that build trust and accelerate purchase decisions.
Include every policy a customer might ask about before purchasing. Write in plain language, not legal boilerplate — AI agents generate conversational responses from this content, so dense legal text produces poor answers.
Cover: Return and refund policy (exact timeframe, conditions, process); Shipping timeframes and carriers by region; Exchange process; Warranty or guarantee terms; Damaged or missing item process; International shipping availability and duties. Write each policy as a direct answer: "We offer free returns within 30 days of delivery. To start a return, email [email]. Refunds are processed within 5 business days."
Write 15–25 questions that your support team answers most frequently. Pull these from your actual support inbox — the questions customers ask before buying are the ones AI agents will encounter. Include: sizing and fit guidance; material and ingredient questions; compatibility or suitability questions ("is this waterproof?", "is this suitable for sensitive skin?"); care and maintenance instructions; comparison questions ("what's the difference between X and Y?"); gift packaging and personalisation; stock availability questions.
Format each FAQ as a question followed immediately by a direct, complete answer. AI agents extract question-answer pairs — don't bury the answer in a paragraph.
Describe how your brand communicates: formal or casual, technical or accessible, playful or serious. Give examples of language you use and language you avoid. Include your brand's key differentiators — the 3–4 things that make your store different from competitors — phrased as clear statements AI agents can reference when making comparisons.
Example format: "Our brand voice is: direct, warm, and knowledgeable without being technical. We avoid: jargon, superlatives ('best in the world'), and formal corporate language. Our key differentiators: [list with one-sentence explanations of each]."
AI agents don't browse your store the way customers do. They parse structured data. A product page that looks beautiful in your Liquid theme may be nearly invisible to an AI agent if the underlying data is incomplete. Here's what AI platforms actually need from your product catalog.
Agentic Storefront checkouts don't fire client-side pixels. Make sure your server-side tracking is in place before AI orders start coming in.
This is the section most setup guides omit entirely. Agentic Storefronts is a new feature with real limitations that directly affect certain store setups. Know these before you enable.
| Limitation | Impact level | Workaround |
|---|---|---|
| GA4 and custom pixels don't fire in checkout | High — tracking gap | Use Shopify's built-in channel attribution in Orders. Ensure server-side tracking (CAPI Shield) is configured. |
| US-only — international stores not eligible | High — blocks access | Complete all preparation steps now. Sign up at shopify.com/chatgpt for early access notification. |
| Product subscriptions not supported | High for subscription stores | Subscriptions redirect to your store for checkout. One-time purchases work in AI checkout. |
| Product bundles not supported | Medium — affects bundle stores | Individual products work. Bundles redirect to store. Ensure individual product pages are optimised. |
| Discount codes may not work | Medium — promotion limitation | Automatic discounts are supported. Avoid relying on code-based promotions for AI channel campaigns. |
| Some checkout customisations don't display | Medium for Plus merchants | Customers can still complete checkout. Essential fields display; non-essential blocks may not show. |
| Local delivery and pickup not supported | Low — most DTC stores unaffected | Standard shipping works. Local pickup orders redirect to store. |
| 2–3 week indexing lag before appearing in AI results | Low — patience required | Use Test Agent in admin for immediate data verification. External AI results follow with indexing. |
Limitations current as of March 2026. Shopify is actively developing additional features including more checkout customisation support and international eligibility. Check Shopify's help documentation for the latest updates.
All orders placed through Agentic Storefronts appear in your standard Shopify Orders list with channel attribution. To filter by AI channel: Orders → Filter → Sales channel → Select the channel (ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, or Perplexity). Each order shows the originating AI platform so you know which channel is driving purchases.
This is critical: Google Analytics and custom client-side pixels do not fire in agentic storefront checkouts. Only server-side pixels (Purchase started, Purchase completed) fire. This means if your store relies on GA4 for revenue tracking and your GA4 setup uses client-side events, you will not see agentic storefront revenue in GA4 automatically.
The immediate practical impact: do not use GA4 as your primary attribution source for AI channel performance. Use Shopify Admin's built-in channel attribution instead — it captures all orders regardless of pixel restrictions. For stores using CAPI Shield or similar server-side tracking, your Meta and Google conversion data will remain accurate as server-side events are unaffected.
Track these weekly once your Agentic Storefronts have been active for 2–3 weeks: AI channel order count vs previous week; Average order value from AI channels vs your store average; Conversion rate on AI-referred traffic (visible in your Shopify Analytics → Sessions by referrer); Search trends and FAQ topics surfaced in your Agentic Storefronts dashboard — these tell you what customers are asking about your products in AI conversations.
With agentic checkout not supporting client-side pixels, having server-side tracking in place is essential for any store receiving AI-attributed orders. CAPI Shield (free from Stack Architect) implements Meta Conversions API and Google Enhanced Conversions server-side — ensuring your ad tracking remains accurate even as AI channels grow as a proportion of your orders. If your store isn't eligible for Agentic Storefronts yet — because you're outside the US, or because it hasn't rolled out to your store — this is the most important section of the guide for you. Your products are already being crawled and recommended by AI platforms regardless of your eligibility status. The preparation you do now directly improves how you appear in AI search results today.
The Knowledge Base App improves AI agent accuracy for your brand even without Agentic Storefronts enabled. AI platforms that crawl your store use knowledge base content when answering questions about your products. This is the single highest-leverage preparation step available right now. Install via Shopify App Store.
AI platforms crawl your store now. Every incomplete product title, thin description, or missing image is an AI recommendation that either doesn't happen or happens inaccurately. Audit your top 50 products by traffic and fix each one using the criteria in Section 6. This improves both AI discovery and traditional SEO simultaneously.
FAQ schema markup tells AI search engines — and traditional search engines — that your content directly answers questions. Every post on this site uses FAQ schema. Add it to your product pages, blog posts, and About/FAQ pages. This improves AI citation probability right now, before Agentic Storefronts even becomes available to your store.
Check that your robots.txt is not blocking AI crawlers and that your sitemap.xml includes all key pages — product pages, collection pages, policies, and blog posts. In Shopify Admin: Online Store → Preferences → Sitemap. Verify your sitemap URL (usually yourstore.com/sitemap.xml) is complete and up to date.
Go to shopify.com/chatgpt to register for early access notification. Shopify is rolling out eligibility in waves — checking your admin weekly for the Agentic Storefronts section costs nothing. International eligibility has not been officially announced but is widely expected to follow US rollout.
When Agentic Storefronts become available, client-side pixel tracking won't fire in AI checkouts. Get server-side tracking in place now so you're not scrambling after the fact. CAPI Shield implements server-side Meta and Google tracking free. Takes 2–3 hours. Do it before your first AI order arrives.
Shopify Agentic Storefronts allow customers to discover and purchase your products directly inside AI platforms — ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity — without leaving the conversation. Launched as part of Shopify's Winter '26 Edition, they work through a single setup in your Shopify admin that connects your product catalog to all supported AI channels simultaneously via Shopify Catalog. No separate integrations are required. Orders appear in your Shopify Admin with full AI channel attribution. There are currently no fees associated with selling on Agentic Storefronts.
As of March 2026, Agentic Storefronts require: a US-based store selling to US customers; store policies (Terms of Service) added; guest checkout enabled — you cannot require customers to log in before purchasing; agreement to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service. They are currently in early access and not available to all stores. Check your eligibility now: Shopify Admin → Settings → Apps and sales channels. If you see an Agentic Storefronts section, you're eligible. If not, sign up at shopify.com/chatgpt for notification when your store becomes eligible.
The Knowledge Base App is free for Shopify Plus merchants. For standard Shopify plans (Basic, Shopify, Advanced), it costs $50/month. The app is invisible to your customers — it only surfaces to AI agents via Agentic Storefronts and AI crawlers. It allows you to upload FAQs, return policies, shipping information, and brand voice guidelines so AI agents give accurate, on-brand answers about your products. Even without Agentic Storefronts fully active, the Knowledge Base App improves how AI platforms represent your brand in recommendations.
Yes. Your products are discoverable on AI platforms regardless of your Agentic Storefronts settings — through web crawling, Shopify Catalog, and any product feeds you share. The difference is checkout: with Agentic Storefronts active, customers complete the purchase directly inside the AI chat. Without it, they are redirected to your Shopify store to complete the purchase. Discovery is automatic. Direct AI checkout requires Agentic Storefronts to be enabled and your store to be eligible.
Key limitations as of March 2026: (1) US only — US stores selling to US customers only; (2) No GA4 or custom pixel tracking in agentic checkout — only server-side pixels fire, so use Shopify's built-in channel attribution; (3) No subscriptions — subscription products redirect to your store; (4) No product bundles in AI checkout; (5) Discount codes may not work — automatic discounts are supported; (6) Some checkout blocks don't display — mainly affects Plus merchants with custom checkout extensions; (7) No local delivery or pickup — standard shipping only in AI checkout.
Most merchants see AI-referred traffic and product appearances within 2–3 weeks of enabling Agentic Storefronts and populating their Knowledge Base. You can verify your data immediately using the Test Agent tool inside your Shopify Admin (Agentic Storefronts → Test Agent) — this gives instant feedback on how AI agents are reading your product data and knowledge base content. External AI platform results follow with indexing lag. If you're not appearing after 4 weeks, review your product data completeness and Knowledge Base content using the criteria in Section 5 and 6 of this guide.
CAPI Shield implements Meta Conversions API and Google Enhanced Conversions server-side — free, from Stack Architect. Get it in place before your first AI order arrives.
